White Lies

Tangential thought inspired by question #9 at Violins & Starships.

A bad lie is deception for personal gain.

A white lie is deception to prevent minor harm to a person you care about.

For example, "I didn't steal your money" vs. "No, honey, that dress doesn't make you look fat."

  1. Yes, Harvey, we KNOW Whitey lies.

    Oh, misread, sorry, carry on.

  2. Wouldn't a white lie technically be for personal gain, too?

"No honey, that dress doesn't make you look fat.' is not really sparing her feelings as much as it is sparing being on the receiving end of a tongue lashing or dirty looks. Hence, personal gain. :)

  3. I like better, "fat? really? let's get healthy so we can stay together longet."
