Misplaced Priorities

Sayeth the Prez:
You've got to have good math skills. You have to have good science skills. You have to have good communications and writing skills. If you don't, it's going to be very hard to get a job.

Nah.

Science skills are overrated. In real life they only come in handy for understanding the opening credits for Breaking Bad or fully appreciating Daniel Radcliffe's cover of an old Tom Lehrer song.

Math... eh. If you can make change from a $100 bill without a calculator, the sky's the limit in retail. Even if you start your own business, you can hire an accountant for anything more complicated.

Language and writing, well, there's your cornerstone. If you can't master vocabulary, spelling, and grammar in your native tongue, you are doomed. Your future will only be as bright as your back is strong.

Read.

A *lot*.

And if you don't know a word, look it up. The better you are at this, the better your life will be.

  1. "You've got to have good math skills" Then later states that you have to have good communication skills. After that first sentence he obviously needed a better teleprompter.

  2. And if you don't know a word, look it up.

or just use it on the internet and argue with people about what it really means.

  3. Prof - ironically, I usually look it up on the internet :-)

But seriously, as a kid, I would often sit down with Stephen King in one hand, and a dictionary in the other.

  6. Good advice.

Job seekers should also carry a Race Card, if applicable.
