This Is New

From Politico:
The White House isn't feeling very kissy toward Benetton, after the publicity-loving clothing company photo-shopped President Obama into an ad smooching Chinese leader Hu Jintao and Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez.

"The White House has a long-standing policy disapproving of the use of the president's name and likeness for commercial purposes," deputy press secretary Eric Schultz said in a statement.

Oh, *really*, Eric?:

If there is a policy, it's obviously only against unflattering uses.

Still waiting for the recall order on 50 million Obama bobbleheads.

Or the rest of these assorted dust-gatherers.


  1. Still a stupid move by Beneton, followed by a stupider move from the White House (as usual). In three years they still haven't figured out how to put together a response to something they are unhappy about, without making themselves look like fools. You have to wonder if they are even capable of it. (Rhetorical question with obvious answer, of course)

  2. Not sure I'd call Benetton's move "stupid", exactly. If the purpose of the ad was to bring people's attention to their product, I'd say they succeeded wildly.

    Sure, I thought it was tasteless and offensive, but then again I'd never buy douchebag hipster clothes anyway, so it's not like they lost any revenue from me.
